Climate conditions and crowd levels for each month of the year.
Plovdiv in January is cold, with daytime highs around 5°C (41°F) and overnight lows that typically drop to -2°C (26°F) or below. Snow is possible but not guaranteed. The city's seven hills look striking under a dusting of white. Crowds are at their lowest. This is as quiet as the city gets.
Marginally warmer than January, highs nudge up to 8°C (47°F), but still firmly winter, with lows around -1°C (29°F) and about 33mm of rainfall spread across the month. The days start to lengthen noticeably. There's a sense that spring is coming even if it hasn't quite arrived.
March can feel like a tease. Some days reach 13°C (56°F) and you can almost imagine sitting outside. Then the next drops back to grey and cold with lows still hovering around 2°C (35°F). Rainfall edges up slightly to around 38mm. The city moves at a slow, unhurried pace that has its own appeal.
This is when Plovdiv begins to open up properly. Highs reach 18°C (65°F) on good days. The Old Town's flowering gardens and café terraces start filling in. Lows at 6°C (43°F) mean evenings still call for a layer. Days are well suited to walking for hours through the historic neighborhoods. The city's energy visibly lifts.
May is the wettest month in Plovdiv's calendar, around 76mm of rain on average. The showers tend to be brief and the intervals between them are lovely, with warm days pushing up to 24°C (75°F) and mild nights around 11°C (52°F). The surrounding countryside is at its greenest. The city's festival season starts to build.
Summer proper arrives in June, with highs around 28°C (83°F) and lows settling into comfortable 15°C (59°F) territory. Rainfall drops back significantly from May's peak. You can reasonably count on long stretches of sunshine. The Old Town evenings are warm enough for outdoor dining until late.
Plovdiv's hottest month, with highs averaging 31°C (88°F). Warm enough that midday wandering in the Old Town is best taken at a slow pace. Retreat to a shaded courtyard café until the heat eases. Lows around 17°C (63°F) mean nights are pleasant. Rainfall is relatively low at 38mm.
Much like July in temperature, highs at 31°C (88°F), lows at 17°C (62°F), and the heat tends to feel its most settled and reliable. Plovdiv hosts several major events this month, including the Kapana Fest in the creative quarter. Expect higher accommodation rates. Book ahead.
One of the most rewarding months to visit Plovdiv, as the heat eases to around 26°C (79°F) during the day while lows drop to a cool 13°C (55°F) at night. Rainfall is light at 36mm. The light shifts to that particular golden quality that photographers obsess over. Crowds thin meaningfully after the summer rush.
October is solidly autumn. Highs hit 19°C (67°F). Lows sink to 7°C (45°F). Evenings turn crisp and clear. The hillside neighborhoods of Plovdiv glow amber. Leaf color peaks. This is the month to walk the Old Town. Footsteps echo on cobblestones. Light slants golden.
November demands a proper coat. Highs drop to 12°C (54°F). Lows hover near 3°C (37°F). The city empties. Streets hush. Plovdiv's indoor culture wakes. Galleries shine. The Opera fills seats. Cave-like bars glow candle-red. Summer cannot match this mood.
Cold, festive, quiet. That is December. Highs linger at 6°C (43°F). Lows dip to -1°C (29°F). Lights sparkle around the central square. Seasonal trimmings appear. Pair the trip with Sofia. Come during the holidays. Summer crowds miss this hushed charm.
